Burn Permits

 

Burn permits are typically issued between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. weekdays at the District Office, 895 First South Street.

PERMIT HOLDERS MUST CALL THE DISPATCH CENTER AT 282-7101 BEFORE BURNING
 
Having a burn permit does not release the holder from liability resulting from damages or the obligation to comply with other applicable laws, regulations or ordinances.  When requesting authorization to burn, persons must provide a valid permit number before receiving permission to burn.  Burn permits are issued by the Clarkdale Fire District per a contract with ADEQ.  
 
Materials that are NOT to be burned:    
    *Poison Oak, Poison Ivy, Poison Sumac or Oleanders *Antifreeze
    *Rubber products *Batteries
    *Asbestos or items containing asbestos *Aerosol spray cans
    *Polyester *Explosives or ammunition
    *Thermal Insulation *Garbage
    *Construction items, i.e. electrical wire, insulation, asphalt shingles, lumber, tar paper, asphalt material, wire insulation, etc.
    *Petroleum products, i.e. crankcase or transmission oil, oil filters, etc.
    *Hazardous material containers, i.e. those containing pesticides, lead compounds, cadmium compounds, mercury compounds, arsenic compounds.
    *Hazardous waste products, i.e. paints, pesticides, cleaners, stains and varnishes
    *All plastic materials, such as bottles for household chemicals, grocery and retail bags, etc.
 
Materials which are AUTHORIZED to be burned:  
Only organic materials such as weeds, grass, leaves and tree trimmings. (Note: Burning Poison Oak, Poison Ivy, Poison Sumac and Oleanders are strictly forbidden)
 
Times for Burning  
Burning may be conducted during the following time periods only:
 
        March - October:  9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.        November - February:  10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m
 
Required Notification  
The Dispatch Center must be notified prior to the setting of the fire at 282-7101.  The permit may be used by the permit holder at any location within the Clarkdale Fire District boundaries as long as the current contact information and physical address of the permit holder is registered with the Dispatch Center.  Burning may be prohibited when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous.
Conditions for Burning  
Burning shall be conducted only during wind conditions which prevent dispersion of smoke into populated areas, visibility impairment on traveled roads or airports to the extent a safety hazard results, or otherwise create a public nuisance, and does not cause uncontrollable spreading of the fire. During times of high winds, no burning will be authorized.  No fire shall be ignited during any air pollution emergency episode in effect in the area of the burn, or during periods when smoke can be expected to accumulate to the extent it will significantly impair visibility.  
Burning Preparation  
Materials to be burned shall be readily combustible and placed in a pile or collected in a pit no larger than 4'x4'x4', or ignited in place using high temperature mechanical burners on ditch banks and/or fence rows in such quantities to be completely consumed within the permitted burn hours.  Piles or pit contained material shall be no less than 50 feet from any structure. Burner contained materials shall be no less than 15 feet from any structure and shall require an inspection by the District.  Igniting in place or field burning is allowed only upon specific authorization of the District.
 
Burning Requirements  
Fires shall be attended at all times.  The person attending the fire shall have the necessary equipment (water supply, water hose, shovel, sand, etc.) to control the burning and put out the fire if needed.  Create a firebreak 10 feet wide at property lines and around all structures and trees (firebreaks may be reduced to 5 feet wide if charged garden hoses are available to reach all areas of the burn).  Fires must be completely extinguished before leaving unattended.
 
Length of Permit  
Permits are valid for the length of time in which the permit holder reside at the current physical address.  Upon a permanent change of physical address, this permit must be relinquished back to the Clarkdale Fire District immediately.
